Recordings, Tours, Awards Johnson's songwriting impressed the Nashville music establishment. Her songs were quickly picked up and recorded by artists including Jo Dee Messina, among others. During she sang backing vocals on Martina McBride's tour. In she toured with country stars Reba McEntire and Merle Haggard and released a debut album, Room with a View , which showcased songs written or co-written by Johnson. A commercial success, Soundscan described it as the highest-selling debut album in Arista Nashville history.
In she co-headlined Keith Urban's Canadian tour. Her album Dress Rehearsal , which she co-produced, was released in It consisted mostly of songs written or co-written by Johnson and included "Die of a Broken Heart," a hit. During she won the Academy of Country Music's award for top new female vocalist, and a Juno. The following year she received the American Music Award for favourite new country artist. Johnson has obtained numerous Canadian Country Music Association awards; in alone her second album won six awards.
Johnson performed at Nashville's Grand Ole Opry's 80th birthday celebration in Cornblum, Marcy. She had many influences growing up. Her parents would play country music records while later in life she listened to many other artists and genres.
At 5 years old she started taking piano lessons from the pastors wife at her church. Then in high school she learned to play the flute, saxophone and clarinet. Because her teacher Evangeline Theissen kept sending her books about piano, she continues to play the keys with passion.
Although she took music in high school, her teachers were not very encouraging. She then turned to science. The following year she returned to Alberta, Canada and specialized in education. While attending collage she frequently went to the local clubs and sat in with some of the featured bands. It was while playing with the local bands that her confidence grew on stage and in her talents.
The bands, watching her perform on stage night in and night out, encouraged her to get back into music. It was then that she realized that her true calling was country music. Carolyn, realizing that country music was her future, decided to pursue an education in the production of music. Johnson applied her natural talent and incredible work ethic towards learning the technical aspects of the music business by day, while continuing to write songs and waitress by night. She honed her craft by viewing songwriting videos and studying weekly issues of Billboard and Music Row magazines to learn who was who in the business.
Johnson joined the Nashville Songwriters Association International and traveled to Nashville for the first time in to participate in one of its workshops. For three years, she commuted the miles between Vancouver and Nashville until she was able to obtain a work visa and move there permanently in
